You will find a camping site not far away.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Karavo Petra beach<\/strong> (1.5 km west of Paleochora), 1 km long. Beach known for its famous big rock in the shape of a boat in the middle of the beach! Here you will find beautiful clear water and other pebbles. Great place for diving.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pahia Ammos beach<\/strong>: west of Pale\u00f3chora, it is the central beach of the town with great facilities for swimmers and sunbathers, as well as water sports facilities. The beach is exposed to west or south winds, so the waves are quite high and not necessarily suitable for children. The western part of the beaches is very popular with nudists.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The beaches of Grammeno<\/strong>: 5 km east of Pale\u00f3chora, the peninsula of Grammenos is located at the exit of the river Pelekaniotis. The peninsula consists of fine and hard pebbles, clear blue waters and three distinct Blue Flag beaches (Alonaki, Votsalo or Gialos). Both beaches are equipped with beach chairs and umbrellas. The top of the hill, once an island, became the focal point of Pale\u00f3chora&#8217;s history, when the castle of Pale\u00f3chora (known as Celino Kastelli until the end of the 19th century) was built in 1282. By Marino Gradonico, the Duke of Crete under Venetian rule. The name Pale\u00f3chorad comes from two Greek words; Palio is ancient and the city means Chora &#8211; because the city was built on the ruins of an ancient city.<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>A few centuries later, and after several defeats, the castle was destroyed in 1539 by the famous pirate Barbarossa, whom you will often hear in Crete. The castle was abandoned until the end of the 19th century, when the port established trade relations with Chania in the late 17th century.
